Abstract:

While the traditional Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield IPB process adequately supports the commanders overall planning and decision-making by providing a logical framework for battlefield analysis, it does not consider threats in the virtual battlefield. The process presented in this paper merges the structured approach of the IPB with the softwarenetwork security communitys Security Threat Modeling approach into a new process called Intelligence Preparation of the Virtual Battlefield or IPVB. The purpose of the IPVB is to provide the Commander with a more holistic understanding of all the threats posed to the networks in the area of operations and allow improved overall decision-making regarding the virtual battlefield.
