Abstract:

A pyrolysis-gas chromatographic method was developed in 2000 to characterize military fibers and fabrics. As the performance and durability of materials relate to their fiber composition, a sensitive and reliable method for the identification of fibers became necessary. The method was further improved by incorporating a mass spectrometer as a detector to ensure accurate component identification from the pyrolyzates. Pyrograms and gas chromatographic analysis are highly reproducible. This analytical method is reliable for the characterization of fibers.
