Abstract:

The financial challenges associated with the managed care environment in the health care industry have resulted in significant emphasis on cost reduction and improvement in business operations and strategies. Recent acquisition discussions between Georgetown University medical Center and MedStar provide an opportunity to reengineer the Workers Compensation and Short and Long-Term Disability Programs. Reengineering efforts should be focused on improving services to the employees and reducing the direct and indirect costs associated with these programs. The literature and existing studies support the instruction of a managed care model focused on case management and medical management to reduce direct and indirect costs. The Workers Compensation and Disability Programs can be organizationally consolidated with the Employee Health Services providing medical management.
