Abstract:

Despite the long-term struggle against insurgencies in Colombia, over the years the U.S. support for Colombian security and stability has focused primarily on counter-drug operations. The attack of September 11, 2001 gave way to a renewed energy in the war against terrorism. The renewed energy influences the level of support the U.S. provides for Colombia. Is the U.S. policy towards Colombia the right one Does it guide the formulation of a coherent strategy employing the right balance of ends, ways and means in pursuit of our national objectives This paper provides an analysis of U.S. policy towards Colombia. It reviews U.S. national interests, policy, and strategy towards Colombia. Additionally, it reviews and assesses Colombias own initiatives and makes policy recommendations.
