Abstract:

Decompensation in hemorrhagic shock is the critical stage after which resuscitative efforts may prove futile. It is thus of interest to the military to be able to identify those casualties at risk for decompensation on the battlefield and to be able to assess response to resuscitative efforts. We hypothesize that decompensation results from potassium-mediated vasodilation andor loss of cardiac contractility, and thus a method of measuring interstitial potassium should be a crucial part of future metabolic monitoring efforts.
