Abstract:

The objective of this grant was to develop facilities and information resources that support current research in biotechnology and to meet the goal of strengthening the biological science programs at HBCUsMls. As a result, the National Biotechnology Information Facility NBlF was established at New Mexico State University NMSU. NBlF retained that name until September 2001, at which time its name was changed to the Southwest Biotechnology and Informatics Center SWBlC. SWBlC was given a 6-month, no-cost extension, which changed the end of the period of performance to 9 March, 2002. SWBlC has become a recognized center for the biotechnology information resources presented through its website httpwww.swbic.org. The most important accomplishments achieved during the grant are presented in this report, and include substantial work in education and outreach to promote biotechnology careers at HBCUsMls. Also, the capital improvements funded by the grant have resulted in a world-class biotechnology and bioinformatics facility in the third floor of the new Biochemistry wing at NMSU. It is the goal of SWBlC to maintain these resources and continue the goal of supporting biotechnology education and research both here and at other HBCUsMls.
