Abstract:

The study concerns the paths and problems of the adaptation of the German Armed Forces to the extenuating challenges of national security following the end of the Cold War. The author prefaces the mentioning of the new army, by discussing the changes that occurred during 1989-1991, and how they might have affected Germany military attitudes. The New Army is then thoroughly analyzed in terms of structure, political handicaps, multinational links, the differentiation of military structure, arms, education, unwritten codes and traditional structuring, the image of the soldier in the German armed forces, and how the military is dealing with German military history and its necessarily broken tradition.
