Design Considerations for Multi-Spectral Systems Operating in the Longwave and Midwave Bands

This paper addresses the issues associated with multi-spectral detection of small dim and CCD targets in heavy clutter. The results are generally applicable but the examples use the infrared thermal bands because of the interest in both day and night operations. The fundamental issue which is addressed is the unknown spectral signature of the target. This problem is first addressed for the case of spectral only detection. The methodology is then extended to the case of space-spectral detection in which the spatial but not the spectral signature of the target is known. The performance loss associated with the target spectral signature being unknown is quantified in terms of increased PsubFA.
