Abstract:

IDA conducted a case study of the Navys FA-18EF program to document lessons learned from a DoD program using advanced acquisition and development methods. The prime contractor, McDonnell Douglas Corporation MDC, used the Integrated Product and Process Development IPPD management philosophy to design and produce the FA-18EF tactical aircraft. Five concepts are key to IPPD 1 customer focus, 2 concurrent development of processes and products, 3 multidisciplinary teamwork, 4 proactive identification and management of risk, and 5 integrated information environment. This case study shows from the contractors perspective how the activities of the FA-18EF program related to each of the five concepts.
