Abstract:
This report presents results of work funded by the Office of Naval Research to study heat damage in organic matrix composites. The results presented in this report identify the mechanisms of heat damage, and the effects on physical and mechanical properties of composites subjected to high temperatures. A model to describe the heat damage process is presented, and a methodology to determine composite damage is supplied. In addition, specimens and data from this effort were supplied to government and private industry groups developing nondestructive evaluation techniques for heat damage evaluation in naval aircraft.
