Design and Fabrication of a Boron Aluminum Composite Wing Box Test Specimen

This report summarizes the design, analysis, fabrication and testing of a wing box specimen utilizing boron aluminum as the primary structural material. The primary purpose of the program was to demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing boron-aluminum in a major aircraft structural component. The wing section selected is typical of many aircraft wing structures and simulated an integral wing fuel tank section capable of withstanding internal pressure in addition to the basic bending and torsion loads. The wing section was not intended to typify any specific aircraft nor was it intended to solve any design problem associated with any specific aircraft. Rather, it was to demonstrate, as the next logical development step, the ability of boron-aluminum to be used in a lightweight primary aircraft structure.
