Abstract:
Birth defects remain the leading cause of infant mortality in the United States and, to date, the Department of Defense DoD has no comprehensive monitoring program in place to track birth defects. Having completed a feasibility study on the construction of a birth defects registry in San Diego county, the Naval Health Research Center proposes a DoD-wide, hybrid surveillance system to track birth defects among military members and their dependents.
