Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis are as follows 1 to determine the requirements of a visual ground to air marking system for use by ground combat or patrol type units in a counterinsurgency environment 2 To report the results of an experiment designed to give the answers to the problem above 3 To make recommendations as to a possible way to get workable marking systems in the U.S. Army inventory. Chapter 1 presents the background. Chapter II contains the experiment design. Five variables are tested smoke, panels, red cross marker, pyrotechnics, and a balloon system. Chapter III contains a detailed description of the experiment. Chapter IV presents the reduced data. Chapter V contains the findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
