A Remedial Investigation at the Milan Army Ammunition Plant, TN, was conducted for the U.S. Army Toxic and Hazardous Materials Agency, under the terms of an Interagency Agreement with the State of Tennessee and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The study focused on the CERCLA site and selected RCRA regulated units identified by previous studies as potential sources of contamination. A broad range of chemicals including metals, explosives, and other organic compounds were found in source areas and in groundwater. The results of a risk assessment indicate that unacceptable levels of human health risks potentially exist. Conceptual models of site and unit characteristics were formulated to explain major findings, and areas not contributing to the problem were identified. For many source areas, major unknowns exist regarding hydrology, extent of contamination, and current and future impacts to groundwater quality.
