Abstract:
This investigation was conducted to determine mooring forces, due to wave action, on a roll-onroll-off discharge facility RRDF deployed in a prototype test demonstration in the spring of 1998. Experiments were conducted in an L-shaped flume using a model discharge facility. The model was tested for a range of conditions including various angles of wave attack, types of mooring lines, and wave heights. Experiments were conducted with both loaded and unloaded discharge facilities. The selected BB class mooring with its working load of 250 kips should prove adequate for the range of conditions examined. When the RRDF is moored with chain, a few of the peak forces approach or even exceed 250 kips however, these forces act for a very short interval, 0.5 sec or less. Based on results of experiments conducted with the elastic mooring line, a 3-in.-diam nylon line should be sufficient to tether the RRDF.
