Abstract:
This study was conducted to characterize the degradation of fatigue life due to notch sensitivity and environmental atmospheres. This degradation effect was compared to previous effects upon the fatigue life behavior of a 300M steel. The test specimens were subjected to constant amplitude tension-tension R0.1 fatigue testing in laboratory air and a salt water environment. Two notch depths were produced to simulate machining damage, while the two notch radii tried to bound the stress states from this induced machining damage.
