Abstract:

The sorption and selectivity of aqueous Pb, Cd, and Zn onto a mineral apatite from North Carolina were investigated in relation to a wide range of pH. The heavy metals were applied as single species and multiple species. The sorption of aqueous Pb was primarily through a process of the dissolution of apatite followed by the precipitation of variable pyromorphite-type minerals. Hydrocerussite Pb3CO32OH2 or PbOH2 . 2PbCO3 and lead oxide fluoride Pb2OF2 formed only under extremely alkaline condition.
