Abstract:

The values of the dielectric constant of simple molecules is discussed first, along with the relationship between the dielectric constant and other physical properties such as boiling point, melting point and refractive index. The Debye equation shows the relationship of dielectric constant with the polarizability and dipole moment of materials. The interpretation of the Debye equation as it applies to lubrication oils is considered. The effect of base oil paraffinic versus napthenic and additives on the dielectric constant of oils is included in this paper. The temperature and electric field frequency dependence of dielectric constant on lubrication oils is discussed.
