Abstract:

In this paper the author reviews the historical underpinnings of Israels National Security Strategy NSS, including the rationale for its adoption and the objectives to be secured by it. The paper then examines how the strategy has held up over the years as the national security environment confronting Israel has evolved. The importance of the 1967 Six Day War and the 1973 Yom Kippur War is then examined with emphasis on the changing nature of Israels national security posture as the result of the acquisition of additional territories in those wars. From here, the paper moves to an analysis of the current strategic situation in Israel and, with that, an assessment of the degree to which the historic NSS serves to provide for the security of the state today. The paper concludes with a view to future and suggests changes to the strategy that will be required to ensure the long-term security of Israel in a volatile and constantly changing national security environment.
