Currently each of the military departments has its own policy on unprofessional relationships or fraternization. This diversity in policies causes confusion both inside and outside the military. The one common element among all the services policies is the use of the Uniform Code of Military Justice for punitive action. Mindful of the civilian control of the military, the civilian perception of what constitutes an unprofessional relationship is very important. This paper reviews and compares the current policy of the services and the current trends and policies in the civilian world and recommends one policy for DOD wide usage.
