Abstract:

Mutually coherent RF photonic remoting is compared with mutually incoherent RF photonic systems. Current multichannel RF photonic systems for phased array antennas are implemented with mutually incoherent sources. Additional photonic processing operations with these systems cannot take advantage of courant fan in gain and suffer the DC bias build up well known in incoherent optical signal processing. Mutually coherent RF photonic systems are investigated and shown to have higher gain and higher dynamic range than incoherent systems. The trade-off between subarray partitioning size and link dynamic range is also studied.
