Abstract:

This report documents one component of a year-long effort to analyze key factors influencing Chinas national security strategies, policies, and military capabilities, and their potential consequences for longer-term U.S. national security interests. Specifically, this report examines the current and future roles of the Chinese military in Chinas national security policy process. The report was produced under the aegis of a project entitled Chinese Global and Regional Strategy and U.S. Policy Dynamics and Implications. A second document resulting from this project is Professionalization of the Senior Chinese Officer Corps, by James C. Mulvenon, MR-901-OSD, 1997. This volume is a revised version of the original report that appeared in 1996.
