The goal of this project is to develop, refine, and apply an integrated approach to field observations and modeling employing genetics, biochemistry, bioacoustics, and numerical models to improve our quantitative knowledge of rate processes at active boundaries of ocean ecosystems. The proposed effort will develop and employ a state-of-the-art global ocean model the model will be applied, as an example, to a complex biologicalchemicalphysical system. This project specifically intends to enhance our ability to predict the distribution, growth, and community structure of biological species in the upper ocean. Our long-term objective will help ONR meet the needs of the operational Navy to predict biological effects on acoustical properties in the coastal ocean.
