The long term objective of this study is to improve functional outcome following traumatic brain injury TBI by enhancing mechanisms which are neuroprotective. This study investigates the role of neurotrophic factors in attenuating neuronal injury after brain trauma. Neurotrophic factors are a family of structurally related polypeptides which have been shown to play a critical role during neuronal development and appear to mediate a protective response to trauma and disease in mature animals.
