Abstract:

The building of atomic, and later thermonuclear, weapons was an event of such epochal significance in the twentieth century that its history has preoccupied scientists worldwide and the international community at large. Those who have participated directly in projects aimed at creating the nuclear arsenal do not, and cannot, remain aloof from exposing the facts of that history. Of special interest is the history of the development of thermonuclear weapons in the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as the worlds first countries to create this most dreadful species of nuclear weapon.
