The purpose of this research is to experimentally determine the diagnostic accuracy and clinical acceptability of digitally acquired mammograms displayed on softcopy display compared to laser printed hardcopy. Implementation of state of the art digital mammography and displays in the clinical setting is underway. We have investigated image display enhancement methods that have demonstrated improvement in feature detection in the laboratory. We are now implementing the best image processing methods into state of the art high resolution, high brightness displays coupled to a full field digital mammography unit. We are now obtaining digital mammograms under a clinical protocol that will allow us to carry out a pilot observer study to compare laser printed film images vs workstation displays.
