Abstract:

This Review and Analysis examined the science of decision making to determine how the Air Force could exploit this discipline in the future battle space and military operations. The most important messages of this Review Analysis for the Air Force are these 1 Research on the differences between group and individual decision making indicates that the biggest benefit of collaborative group decision making is the groups increased cognitive resources, compared to that of a single individual. 2 The greatest detriment to collaborative distributed decision making is that we must rely on technology rather than face to face interactions, and subtleties of human communication may be lost. 3 The best predictor of good decision making is the experience of the decision maker, the implication being that training for decision making is paramount. 4 While personality and other selection indices of the future may have better success, current tools do not offer a great deal of information about who will be a good decision maker in general. 5 All the military services are engaged in research into what variables are important in a group decision making program.
