Today, radio waves are used in a wide variety of fields, beginning with broadcasting and including various radars, remote sensing systems, and high frequency heating equipment. Radio waves have thus come to play an important role not only in the everyday living but also in industry and scientific research, and without them modern socioeconomic activity would not be possible. Until now, electric waves have mainly been used in the frequency bands below the microwave band with some exceptions, frequency bands above the millimeter wave band have not been tapped because, among other reasons, the need to use millimeter wave technology has yet to be fully established. Technical development of the millimeter wave band has advanced in recent years, however, and the physical characteristics of the millimeter wave band have led some to propose new uses that are quite different from the ways electric waves in the frequency bands below the microwave band have been used. Development of millimeter waves is expected.
