The synthesis of phosphorus containing dendrimers is described up to the fifth generation 96 terminal groups. The surface chemistry of these dendrimers allows the grafting of various functionalities such as phosphate 6 O-POOEt2 groups, aminophosphate up to 96 N-POOEt2 groups, aminophosphite up to 96 N-POEt2 groups, functionalized phosphonate up to 96 HCOHPOOR2 R Et, CH211CH3, up to 96 HCN-PrPOOEt2, or up to 48 CHCH-POOEt2, phosphorus ylide 6 COCHPPh3, carboxylic acid up to 24 CHCH-COOH, and tetraazamacrocycle up to 12 cyclam. These surface functionalities have been chosen due to the well known properties of the corresponding monomers andor polymers in various areas such as adhesives, flame retardants, fuel additives, sequestring agents.
