Abstract:

This paper summarizes information provided by Lieutenant General Retired Emmett Paige, Jr. during interviews conducted by Lieutenant Colonel Craig B. Hanford from October 1996 to April 1997 as part of the U.S. Army War CollegeU.S. Army Military History Institute Senior Officer Oral History Program. This summary highlights the life, experiences, and insights of four decades of Army service. Only the thirteenth black American to be promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in the history of the U.S. Army, he was the first black Army Signal Corps officer to rise to the rank of Lieutenant General and the first black General Officer to become an Assistant Secretary of Defense.
