Abstract:

Both endogenous and environmental factors are thought to contribute to cancer of the breast. Among these, estrogens have attracted intense interest for decades, but the mechanisms by which this class of hormone mediate normal and neoplastic growth have remained obscure. We provide in vitro data to support the hypothesis that 16 alpha-hydroxyestrone is unique among estrogens with regard to its transforming properties in mammary cells.
