Abstract:
A new civilization is dawning as the world transitions from a Second Wave, industrial society to a Third Wave, information society. The armed forces of the United States plan to take advantage of new technologies and societal changes spawned by the Third Wave to drive a Revolution in Military Affairs RMA. Many past RMAs have had a complementary Revolution in Military Engineering. The seeds for such a Revolution in Military Engineering were planted in Americas Army when combat engineer units were reorganized under the Third Wave concept known as Engineer Force E-Force. Four emerging engineer warfare areas will capitalize on E-Force so they will, collectively, energize the drive for a Revolution in Military Engineering Prime Architect, Topographic Warfare, Virtual Battlespace Occupation, and Dominating Mobility. These areas combine new technologies, creative doctrine, and innovative organizations to offer leap-ahead capabilities for the combined arms force of the future. Achieving a Revolution in Military Engineering will cement the legitimacy of military engineering as one of the Armys core competencies.
