Abstract:

The challenge of the 21st century for the U.S. Army Special Forces is to remain relevant to the security environment in which they operate. Yet, the Army, and to a lesser degree Special Forces, remain myopically focused on warfighting requirements. In the aftermath of the Cold War and in an era of declining military budgets, the Armys challenge for the future is to retain and to fully resource the forces which are best suited for both peace operations and full scale combat. The United States Army Special Forces is one such force. Special Forces should adopt peace operations as a primary mission. Moreover, Special Forces must develop the appropriate doctrine and supporting tactics, techniques, and procedures to ensure success in future peace missions.
