Abstract:
The overall objective of this research is to explore the role of matrix metalloproteinases MMPs and the tissue inhibitors of metal- loproteinases TIMPs in the invasive and metastatic processes of human breast tumors. The hypothesis to be tested is that an imbalance arises through normal or elevated production of MMPs accompanied by a diminished production of inhibitory TIMPs. Metastasis of an initially localized tumor to vital organs is the dominant cause of cancer related deaths.
