Ammonium perchlorate AP is an oxidizer used as a component in solid rocket propellants, munitions and fireworks. An in vitro developmental toxicity screen was performed to determine the developmental hazard index AD ratio for AP using the hydra assay. Hydra attenuata have the capability for whole body regeneration. The assay employs exposing both adult hydra and artificial embryos composed of disassociated hydra cells to test compounds to investigate developmental toxicity. Results from the hydra assay of AP indicated the minimal effective concentration required to elicit a toxic response in the adult hydra and in the regenerating hydra were 600 mg AL and 350 mg APL, respectively. The AD ratio of 1.71 determined that AP should not be considered a primary developmental toxin in the context of this assay.
