To ensure that GAOS resources are directed toward the most important issues facing Congress, each of GAOS issue areas develops a strategic plan that describes the significance of the issues it addresses, its objectives, and the focus of its work. Each issue area relies heavily on input from congressional committees, agency officials, and subject matter experts in developing its strategic plan. The Federal Management and Workforce issue area FMWI focuses on the analysis and evaluation of a broad range of crosscutting management, workforce, and statistical issues. Through consultation with key congressional committees, agency officials, and subject matter experts, FMWI has developed this strategic plan to ensure that its resources are directed toward the most important management, workforce, and statistical issues facing Congress. On the pages that follow, we outline FMWIs most significant planned work on these issues 1 managing a government in transition, 2 managing for results and accountability, 3 reevaluating the merit system, 4 redesigning compensation and benefits, 5 collecting and disseminating information, and 6 improving federal regulatory management.
