Abstract:

As with all businesses competing in todays economically oriented health care environment, health service organizations are experiencing an increasing need to ensure the delivery of an acceptable, high quality product to its customers. A skilled staff and experienced, well trained mid-level managers are key elements to increasing efficiency and effectiveness in administrative and managerial functions and processes, and therefore, ensuring quality health care service. Recognizing this, the executive and senior level managers of Moncrief Army Community Hospital MACH, Fort Jackson, South Carolina, were concerned that their mid-level managers were lacking competency in some requisite management skills, knowledge, and abilities SKAs, and that these deficiencies were a detriment to the organizations mission and to the quality of services provided. The purpose of this study was to identify and quantify the training needs of MACHs mid-level managers and provide recommendations for a management development and training program. The results of this study demonstrated that all MACH mid-level managers have more than a marginal need for training in all required SKAs, and, although sociodemographics were not systemically predictive of individual and group training needs, certain sociodemographic-SKA relationships did demonstrate significance. Lastly, the findings of this study suggest that a fully reengineered management development and training program for MACH mid-level managers must be implemented and that further evaluation of training needs for all levels of managers and supervisors at MACH is warranted.
