Abstract:

Penetration parameters are presented for 13-caliber polyethylene cylinders impacting semi-infinite 2024-T351 aluminum targets at velocities ranging from 20,000 to 37,000 ftsec. Variations of the penetration parameters with impact velocity indicate, in accord with the trends previously established at lower speeds, that penetration depth increases with the two-thirds power of velocity. This power law is currently in use by most investigators for the fluid-impact region.
