The objective of this investigation is to study deformation and failure of brittle-matrix composite materials. Unidirectional and crossply continuous-fiber ceramic-matrix composites were investigated under uniaxial loading. Failure mechanisms and their development were studied in real time under the microscope and also by means of ultrasonic and acoustic emission techniques. All observations and measurements were correlated with the macroscopic stress-strain behavior of the material and compared with predictions of analytical models. A new model was developed for correlation of failure micromechanisms and macroscopic response of the material.
