Following literature review, patent search and visit to a combat ration producer packaging a placeable item, the parameters required to vertically fill preformed MRE pouches with placeable items were identified. Four design concepts were analyzed and evaluated resulting in one being selected for further design and construction. In support of the design of the linkage-type dwell mechanism required for a vertical filler, a new design tool was developed. The single and double dwell examples tested resulted in 54 and 41 reductions in structural error thus facilitating the use of linkage-type dwells. However, a prototype, based on the three-dimensional computer models, was not constructed. Instead, funding from DOD allowed purchase of horizontal formfillseal machines at each of the MRE producers and these packaging lines replace vertical filled lines for placeable products. Therefore, no further design or construction was carried out. It is recommended that a design study, using the new tools and approach, be conducted for specific item filling of horizontal formfillseal pouches. Such a design study should include a costbenefit analysis and comparison to robotic and manual filling.
