Objectives are 1 conduct research in seismic mini-array technology and single stations and sparse networks data, CLIN 1 and 2 design, evaluate, and construct TEXESS, in Southwest Texas, and LUXESS, northeast of Luxor, Egypt, CLIN 2, along the lines of a GSE Alpha Station. TEXESS was installed by SMU personnel in August 1993, and the first event was a local recorded on 31 August. With deinstallation on hold awaiting diplomatic agreements, work has been directed to CLIN 1 research. Research on time domain processing of array data has resulted in a significant decrease in the standard deviation of azimuths as compared with f-k processing. For example, a reduction of azimuthal standard deviations from - 15 degrees with f-k processing to -1.4 degrees with time domain processing. The Msmb method is an effective and transportable discriminant for shallow events at teleseimic distances with mb greater than 4.75. SMU has been successful in reducing the detection threshold for fundamental mode Rayleigh waves using signals at regional distances for body wave magnitudes as low as 3. Autoregressive AR modeling on Lg data has resulted in the ability to discriminate small economic explosions from small earthquakes.
