Trifluorojodomethane CF3I is being considered as a replacement compound for Halon 1301. The material would be used as a flooding agent for in-flight aircraft and electronic equipment fires and for fire extinguishment in confined spaces. A series of 4-h nose-only inhalation exposures were performed on F-344 rats at 1.0 and 0.5 CF3I. No signs of toxic stress were noted during or following exposure. Inhalation of CF3I at concentrations of 1.0 or 0.5 in the atmosphere did not result in any observable toxicological effects.
