The Army Research Laboratory ARL at Adelphi, MD, along with the U.S. Army Test Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment Activity of Fort Belvoir, VA, has studied electronic replacements for the standard issue lensatic compass. We studied the KVH DataScope, the KVH C-iOO compass engine, and the Casio Pathfinder digital watchcompass. Several tests were run on each compass to determine its suitability as a replacement for the lensatic compass. We conclude that an electronic compass will be more accurate and useful for the soldier.
