The Application of Geographic Information System Technology to United States Air Force Enlisted Recruiting; An Ohio Example.

In recent years, the United States military has been experiencing significant difficulties in recruiting enlisted personnel.These difficulties affect all the services and have resulted in the subject becoming a very high priority. In an attempt to alleviate this problem, the military is modernizing its recruiting structure and procedures, and appears to be willing to try new approaches and technologies that were before untried. The focus of this paper will be upon a spatial analysis of the efforts of the United States Air Force U.S.A.F. to recruit enlisted personnel for its ranks, with the state of Ohio used as an example. The paper will briefly discuss why recruiting problems may exist, review current methods of recruiting being used, and the plans and goals of the U.S.A.F. Recruiting Service to increase accession rates. The main thrust of the paper will discuss how, and show examples of the benefits of utilizing Geographical Information Systems GIS technology to enhance the recruiting process.
