A study was conducted to investigate the influence of microstructural orientation on tungsten heavy alloy penetrator performance. The penetration performance of model-scale penetrators with a heavily worked microstructure oriented parallel, perpendicular, and at 30 deg, 45 deg, and 60 deg with respect to the penetrator axis were compared in ballistic tests. Residual penetrators were recovered, and the deformation of each microstructural orientation was examined.
