Abstract:

This report analyzes the implications of political-military, social, and economic developments within China for the evolution of Chinese foreign policy over the next 10-15 years, especially policy toward the Asia-Pacific region. The purpose of such analysis is to discern whether and in what manner the profound changes that have taken place within China since the late seventies could prove adverse to U.S. interests in Asia. The analysis thus treats domestic political- military, social, and economic trends and features as largely independent variables. Important external influences upon Chinese policy-for example, the actions of critical actors such as the United States and Japan-are discussed primarily within the context of such domestic factors.
