In early 1991, as OPERATION DESERT STORM ended, the world press reported that nearly 2,000 Kurdish men, women and children were dying each day in the harsh cold of the Turkish-Iraqi mountains. Scenes of bare feet and poorly clothed Kurkish women and children showed them walking in snow and frigid temperatures to escape Saddam Husseins vengeance as he crushed their short-lived Kurdish nationalist uprising.1 Kurdish leaders reported three million Kurds had fled into the 8,000-foot mountains. World opinion and public concern for the plight of the Kurdish people forced-democratic nations to build a military coalition to provide humanitarian assistance to ease the suffering of the Kurds. The code name for this humanitarian operation was OPERATION PROVIDE COMFORT OPC.
