Abstract:
This document describes the process and results of the alternatives assessment conducted for the shell section 36 trenches site 36-3, approximately 31 trenches used from 1952 to 1966 for land disposal of liquid and solid wastes generated from pesticide manufacture. They have been shown to be a source of ground water contamination. A dense non-aqueous phase liquid DNAPL is also believed to have originated from the trenches. The assessment includes the following 1 Site characteristics. 2 Discussion of alternative strategies and technologies, 3 Evaluation of alternatives, and 4 Conclusions. The preferred interim response action consists of 1 a physical barrier encircling the trenches and 2 a soil and vegetative cover.
