Abstract:

This thesis attempts to answer the question, What impact does controlling the accessibility to alcoholic beverages have on crime There is a substantial body of research showing a relationship between alcohol and aggressive behavior, but no research was located which compares like areas which do and do not allow the sale of alcohol. The relationship between crime and alcohol is clear, but there seems to be only assumptions that restricting alcohol availability would reduce crime. This thesis compares like communities which have a different wetdry status using a number of variables which could influence crime rates. These variables include poverty rate, racial mix, single parent families, military installations, distance to the nearest wet area, rate of growth, median age, percentage of urban population, median family income, per capita income, unemployment rate, net migration rate, education level, and population density.
