Abstract:

During Operations Desert ShieldDesert Storm the Air National Guard, along with other reserve components, vindicated Total Force Policy. Whether volunteering or called to active duty, units and members responded with enthusiasm and a high degree of skill and readiness. Air Guard participants maintained the reputation of a world class organization. Most of the Persian Gulf War books and articles printed shortly after the war were descriptive, offering little analysis or direction for the future. With time for thoughtful reflection and analysis, and with greater access to data, more recent works show greater depth. Unfortunately, few enumerate the contributions of Americas reserve component forces.
